French public Agency created in 1975 and placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecology, the Conservatoire du Littoral is implementing a land policy for the definitive protection of natural areas as well as the landscapes on sea and lacustrian shores.
To act, the Conservatoire acquire lands, and the management of its sites is entrusted to local authorities (by priority), to other public structure (National Park, Nature Reserve…) or to NGOs. These sites are definitively dedicated to natural preservation (of both biodiversity, habitats and landscape) but remain opened to the public.
Today, the Conservatoire and its partners are protecting 153.000 ha, which represents more than 12% of the French metropolitan coast line and around 600 natural sites. In the framework of its long-term strategy, the target is the acquisition of 1/3 of the total shoreline at the horizon 2050.
The Conservatoire is involved since the 1990s in numerous international actions in favor of the protection of coast worldwide, and notably in the Mediterranean, and provide its expertise and its experience in the development of policies and protection strategy of the coastal areas and integrated coastal territory planning, in the assistance to coastal protection agencies, in the development of pilot projects on marine, coastal and insular sites, and in the reinforcement of capacity building of staff dedicated to the protection of coast and exchange of knowledge, good practices and experiences.
