DEKAMER Sea Turtle Rescue Center is the first sea turtle rehabilitation center in Turkey built at İztuzu Beach in 2008, and gained an official form in 2009 according to the joint protocol among the Ministry of Environment nd Urbanization - General Directorate for Protection of Natural Assets, Ministry of Forest and Water Affairs -General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, Municipality of Dalyan and Pamukkale University.
DEKAMER monitored the movements of 14 sea turtles throughout Mediterranean Sea by the sponsorship of UNEP Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas (RAC/SPA) and private sector since it was established. This year, the Centre attached satellite transmitters to two more sea turtles as well. DEKAMER is collaborating with the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Napoli (Italy) on the satellite tracking of post-nesting loggerhead turtles, and rehabilitated turtles.
5 sea turtles were released to sea from İztuzu Beach (Köyceğiz-Dalyan SEPA) including 2 equipped ones with a special occasion which Mugla Governor Mustafa Hakan Güvençer and relevant representatives participated on August 1, 2013.
Prof.Dr. Yakup Kaska, the manager of DEKAMER, one of 5-6 centers along Mediterranean, stated that number of nests had significantly increased, and it was thanks to steady and consistent conservation activities run on the sites, he believed.
