About the Centre
To address lack of staff capacity so as enhance the management effectiveness within MPAs, institutional and sustainable capacity building programme should be developed to transfer knowledge and deliver skills to MPAs managers and practitioners, and to enable them to transfer this into the field. As the main outcome of the ‘Strengthening the system of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas of Turkey’ Project, it is expected to improve the capacities and internal structure of responsible institutions needed for prioritizing the establishment of new MCPAs and for more effectively managing existing MCPAs. In this respect, Marine and Coastal Protected Areas Training and Implementation Centre was established in the Gökova Special Environmental Protection Area, Muğla in 2011. The facility was kindly provided by the Municipality of Akyaka. The centre will provide training and implementation opportunities for MPA managers and practitioners and local authorities, user groups including tourism, fisheries sector and local communities.
